We've spent the last three afternoons building the crane version, and the rotating mechanism works surprisingly smoothly. The instructions were clear enough that my 10-year-old could follow them mostly on her own. Definitely a good challenge for that 8+ age range.

My 9-year-old needed almost no help with the rotating crane, and the fact that you get three different builds from the same 270 pieces keeps him coming back to it every weekend. The pieces click together snugly enough that it actually holds up when he pretends to lift things with it.

My 10-year-old put the rotating crane together in a couple of afternoons and was so proud of himself. The pieces click together firmly and the mechanism actually lifts small weights.
